Most new homes that have been built in the last 20-30 years have a texture on the ceiling called knockdown texture. It’s a very unique look that is used on ceilings to cover up minor flaws and imperfections.
There are a few steps taken to create the knockdown texture effect. The first step is to have the ceiling joints taped and smoothed out with joint compound. After that is complete, some minor sanding is done to smooth out any rough edges.
The next step is to mix the dry texture powder with water to a consistency that is slightly thicker than pancake batter. The mix is applied with a high pressure sprayer that sprays small round spatters of texture onto the ceiling. When a room is completed, the texture is allowed to dry for a few minutes before the final troweling is applied. The last step is to take a wide knock down trowel and sweep it over the sprayed texture. This is what gives it the final knock down look. When the troweling is completed it’s allowed to dry and is ready for paint.
